About this show
The programme moves through the dances of different Greek regions: the kalamatianos of the Peloponnese, the tsamikos of Epirus and Roumeli, the Cretan pentozali, the island syrtos and the zeibekiko, danced solo. The zeibekiko is related to the zeybek tradition found on both shores of the Aegean, and the rebetiko music that accompanies it took shape largely in the port districts of Piraeus and Thessaloniki, with the contribution of the population that arrived after the 1923 exchange. The sirtaki, the best known of all to visitors, was in fact choreographed for the 1964 film Zorba the Greek — something the host points out during the show. Dancers wear the foustanella and regional costumes, and the band includes bouzouki, baglamas, laouto and clarinet.

Practical Information
The venue is in Plaka, on the northern slope of the Acropolis, within walking distance of Monastiraki and Syntagma metro stations. Doors open 30 minutes before the performance; the dinner ticket comes with a reserved table, while the show-only ticket is unreserved seating on a first-come basis. The programme runs around 120 minutes without an interval. Photography is allowed, flash is not. In the final block the audience is invited on stage; taking part is entirely optional. The lanes of Plaka are cobbled and sloping — a step-free entrance is available for wheelchair users, please tell us when booking.

It is a music and dance programme, so no language is required to follow it. The host introduces each block briefly in Greek and English, naming the region each dance comes from; for group bookings our guide gives a short summary in Spanish or Turkish.
There is no formal dress code — smart casual is fine. The room is air-conditioned, so a light layer is worth bringing in summer. The lanes of Plaka are cobbled and sloping, so comfortable shoes make the walk to the venue easier.
