Three Iberian capitals, three long-weekend escapes: what to see in 3 days in Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon, which one fits your travel style, and how to combine two in one trip.
Three well-planned days go a long way in a great city: two nights, a couple of museums, the essential neighbourhoods and several memorable meals. Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon are the three city breaks we operate most, and each has a distinct character. Here is the 3-day plan for each — and how to choose.
Day 1: the art triangle — the Prado, the Reina Sofía with Guernica — and a walk through Retiro Park to the Puerta de Alcalá. Day 2: the Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, Habsburg Madrid and Plaza Mayor; at night, tapas in La Latina or the buzz of Malasaña. Day 3: San Miguel market, Gran Vía and shopping, or a 30-minute train hop to Toledo.
Day 1: the Sagrada Família (booking essential), then Passeig de Gràcia with La Pedrera and Casa Batlló. Day 2: the Gothic Quarter and El Born, the cathedral, the Boquería market and the Barceloneta seafront in the afternoon. Day 3: Park Güell first thing, then Montjuïc: cable car, viewpoints and the Magic Fountain. Gaudí's city is the most visual of the three.
Day 1: Alfama with St George's Castle, the miradouros and tram 28; fado at night. Day 2: Belém — the Jerónimos Monastery, the tower and the original pastéis de nata — and sunset in Bairro Alto. Day 3: Sintra and its fairy-tale palaces, 40 minutes by train. The most atmospheric and most affordable of the three.
Madrid and Barcelona are 2.5 hours apart by high-speed train; Lisbon is just over an hour's flight from both. When is the best time? Spring and autumn for all three; Lisbon and Barcelona also shine in mild winter, while August punishes Madrid with heat.

Family-friendly? Yes; Barcelona (beach + Park Güell) and Lisbon (trams + Sintra) are especially rewarding with children.
