Southeast Turkey: from Gaziantep to Mount Nemrut, how we operate it

The southeast is operated by air. From Istanbul there are flights of about two hours to Şanlıurfa (GNY, GAP airport, about 35 km from the city) and to Gaziantep (GZT, about 20 km from the centre), departing from IST and SAW; Adıyaman (ADF) has fewer frequencies and is used only when the programme calls for it. The rule that avoids backtracking is to enter through one airport and leave through the other: Şanlıurfa first, for Göbeklitepe and Harran, and Gaziantep at the end, after Nemrut. That is how the 7-day circuit does it, and how the variants are quoted.

The distances between stages, all by road in a private vehicle with driver:

• Şanlıurfa – Göbeklitepe: about 20 km, half an hour. Şanlıurfa – Harran: about 45 km, 50 minutes. Both sites and Balıklıgöl fit into a single day.
• Şanlıurfa – Kâhta (Adıyaman): about 170 km, around 2 h 30, crossing the Euphrates and the reservoirs of the area.
• Kâhta – Nemrut summit: around 1 h 30 of mountain road, with the Karakuş tumulus, the Roman bridge of Cendere and Arsameia on the way, and the final stretch on foot.
• Adıyaman – Gaziantep: about 150 km, 2 h 30 to 3 hours. Gaziantep – Şanlıurfa direct: about 140 km, 2 hours.

On the 15-day grand journey the entry is different: the group flies to Şanlıurfa from the Aegean on the same day it visits Ephesus, and leaves Adıyaman for Trabzon by road or by a combination of road and flight, depending on the season. • Şanlıurfa. Balıklıgöl, the pool of the sacred fish, the cave associated with the prophet Abraham and the bazaar; depending on the programme, the city's archaeological museum. It is a pilgrimage city: in religious precincts visitors dress modestly and keep photography of people to a minimum. The first afternoon, after the flight, is given to this walk.
• Göbeklitepe. Visited along raised walkways under a protective roof, which limits the route to the marked areas; the guide explains the archaeological context and the main theories. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2018.
• Harran. The conical-roofed mud-brick houses, the walls and the remains of the old madrasa, in the open and without shade. It is combined with Göbeklitepe on the same day, returning to Şanlıurfa in the afternoon.
• Mount Nemrut. The burial tumulus of Antiochus I and the stone heads of the east and west terraces, on the summit, above 2,000 metres. The access ends with a stretch on foot along a stony, sloping path; on the summit it is considerably colder and windier than in the valley, even in summer. The programme aims to coincide with sunset or the best light. World Heritage since 1987.
• Gaziantep. The Zeugma Mosaic Museum, the castle area, the coppersmiths' bazaar and the historic streets, with free time to try the local cuisine and baklava. The natural order over four nights is Şanlıurfa (2), Adıyaman or Kâhta (1) and Gaziantep (1). Mardin is not part of the published programmes: in seven days, adding it means cutting time at Göbeklitepe, Nemrut and Gaziantep. If the agency wants it, it is stated when requesting the quotation and the route is adapted with one more night.

The climb to Nemrut is the day that most shapes the programme. The published circuits climb in the afternoon from Kâhta and aim to catch the sunset on the west terrace, with the night in Adıyaman or Kâhta: it is the most comfortable option for a group, because it does not require an early start and leaves the morning for the drive from Şanlıurfa. Sunrise, on the east terrace, means leaving the hotel in the small hours and is reserved for photography programmes or for those who expressly ask for it; it is quoted as a variant.

The final stretch is on foot, along a stony, sloping path, with a medium walking level. On the summit, above 2,000 metres, the temperature drops noticeably and the wind is constant, so warm clothing is needed even in July. Access to the summit may be closed by snow or ice between late autumn and spring; accessibility is checked for each departure date before the programme is confirmed, and when the climb is not possible another arrangement of the day is proposed.

The southeast has a shorter and more marked season than the west of the country. From March to May and from October to November the temperatures allow Göbeklitepe, Harran and Nemrut to be toured comfortably and the skies are usually clear. Between June and September the heat in Şanlıurfa, Adıyaman and Gaziantep is intense: open-air visits are concentrated in the early morning and late afternoon, the vehicle is air-conditioned and water, a hat and sun protection are advisable. Between late autumn and spring, the Nemrut summit may be closed by snow or ice.

Religious holidays (Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı, on variable dates) change museum and shop hours and fill domestic flights; the operating calendar lists each year's dates and the weekly closures.

Circuits through the southeast are operated privately, with a vehicle and guide for the group. For a closed group the vehicle is chosen by capacity and by the Nemrut mountain road, whose last stretch is covered with smaller vehicles when the coach cannot climb; nights are distributed so that no day exceeds three hours of driving and the climb to the summit is scheduled with margin. The actual hotels are proposed by name in the quotation and confirmed at booking.

It is also the region of two families of themed tours: the archaeological programme, which links Göbeklitepe and Nemrut with the Zeugma mosaics, and the culinary one, with Gaziantep as a stage. In Şanlıurfa, the traditional sıra gecesi evening, with music and local food, is offered as an optional activity. • Domestic flights are issued in economy class; the baggage allowance depends on the airline and fare and is stated on the ticket. Times may be adjusted and the day's programme adapts to the confirmed flight.
• Entrance tickets to the sites and museums listed in the itinerary are included; museums and sites may have a weekly closing day and different summer and winter hours.
• Göbeklitepe is visited along covered walkways; Harran in the open without shade; Nemrut with a final stretch on foot and cold on the summit. Closed shoes and a light jacket throughout the circuit.
• Şanlıurfa is a pilgrimage city: at Balıklıgöl and in religious precincts visitors dress modestly and keep photography of people to a minimum.
• Access to the Nemrut summit is checked for each date; between late autumn and spring it may be closed by snow or ice.
• Hotel zones: in Şanlıurfa, the centre near Balıklıgöl; in the Nemrut area, Adıyaman or Kâhta, subject to availability; in Gaziantep, the historic centre. The actual hotels are proposed by name in the quotation and confirmed at booking.
• A valid passport, the visa or electronic authorisation and entry requirements are the traveller's responsibility and depend on nationality.
