Cappadocia for travel agents: how we operate it

Two full days cover Göreme, the valleys and an underground city. This is how we distribute the visits in the published programmes:

• Arrival day. Morning flight from Istanbul, a transfer of about forty minutes from Nevşehir or an hour and a quarter from Kayseri, and first visits in the afternoon: the Uçhisar viewpoint, the highest natural fortress in the region, and the Devrent and Paşabağ valleys, with the most recognisable fairy chimneys. Avanos, the pottery town on the Kızılırmak, with a ceramics workshop, closes the day.
• First dawn: optional balloon. Pickup an hour and a half to two hours before sunrise, a flight of around one hour and return to the hotel in time for breakfast. The whole activity takes three and a half to four hours.
• Full day. The Göreme Open Air Museum first thing, because it is the busiest point in the region and the route inside its rock-cut churches is narrow. Then an underground city (Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu, the most extensive; Özkonak gets far fewer groups) and the valleys with their dovecotes. Rose Valley is kept for sunset.
• Third morning. Not scheduled with visits: it is the reserve for a balloon postponed by wind, or free time before the airport transfer.

Three facts we ask for when preparing a group, not at the gate: the underground cities have narrow corridors and bent-over stretches, and are not suitable for reduced mobility or claustrophobia; the valleys are walked on dirt paths, in closed shoes; and a cave hotel may be reached by stairs without a lift.

Cappadocia nights are consecutive, never split, and the return flight is scheduled on the last day in the region. With that rule, this is how it sits in the published programmes (cards under Programmes that pass through here):

• Module from Istanbul. The four-day programme by air gives three nights to the region and is the way to sell it on its own or to add it to an Istanbul stay booked separately.
• Istanbul plus Cappadocia. Istanbul and Cappadocia in 7 days with domestic flight flies on day four, places the optional balloon at dawn on day five and returns to Istanbul on day six: two nights in the region and two sunrises.
• Long itineraries. In the 10-day road itinerary the arrival is from Ankara, two nights are spent and the departure is by road to Pamukkale; in the 15-day grand journey the arrival is by air and the route continues by road to Konya and Antalya. The eight-day programme with domestic flights and the themed programmes (Seven Churches, Hittite and Neolithic Anatolia) include it as a stage between Istanbul and the rest of Anatolia.

For an agency building its own programme, in Cappadocia we quote separately the same services that hold the itineraries together:

• Transfers between Nevşehir (NAV) or Kayseri (ASR) airports and the hotel, with the vehicle assigned by number of passengers.
• Licensed guide by the day, in Spanish or English, and vehicle with driver for the valleys, Göreme and the underground cities.
• Entrance tickets for the Göreme Open Air Museum and the underground cities, stand-alone or included in the programme; the amount is set by each site and can change.
• The Turkish night in a cave restaurant in Göreme or Ürgüp, with dinner and show, as an evening activity (card under Day tours and shows).
• The balloon flight as an optional activity: booked separately, with the actual dates, because the daily quota is regulated and depends on the day. The operator's conditions (minimum age, pregnancy, mobility, weight) are declared at booking.

Cappadocia is about an hour's flight from Istanbul and has two airports. The choice is not settled by looking at the map alone:

• Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV): about 40 km from Göreme, around forty minutes of transfer. It connects only with the two Istanbul airports, with few frequencies concentrated in specific slots. If that departure is cancelled, the next one may be the following day.
• Kayseri Erkilet (ASR): about 75-80 km from Göreme, around an hour and a quarter. An international airport with two based airlines, many frequencies spread across the day and direct flights to İzmir, Antalya and several European cities. There is a same-day plan B and the block can end without returning to Istanbul.

For a large group, or for an itinerary that continues to the coast, Kayseri's flexibility usually outweighs the thirty-five minutes of minibus that Nevşehir saves. By road from Istanbul it is about ten hours, only sensible in stages via Ankara, as in the ten-day itinerary.

Two details we settle in the quote: which Istanbul airport the domestic flight leaves from (if the international flight lands at IST and the domestic one leaves from SAW, the transfer crosses the whole city) and how the domestic ticket is issued, because the baggage allowance is by weight and lower than the international one. Hotels carved into the rock are part of the experience and exist in several categories in Göreme, Uçhisar and Ürgüp. We book the category the agency specifies (3-star, 4-star, 5-star, boutique or luxury) and propose the names in the quote, with the dates.

• Cave hotel. Two honest warnings we always give: cave rooms have small windows or none, and access to many of these hotels is by stone stairs without a lift. For a traveller with reduced mobility or heavy luggage, it is worth saying so at quotation to choose well.
• Göreme keeps the Open Air Museum and the valleys closest and concentrates the small and medium-sized cave-hotel offer, the usual one in private programmes.
• Uçhisar and Ürgüp have larger-capacity hotels and higher categories; for groups, the variable we check is coach access, because the village streets are narrow.

During bayram and at year-end hotels fill with domestic demand; early booking is advisable.

Cappadocia is landscape and open air, and its calendar is not Istanbul's. Spring and autumn give the most comfortable temperatures for walking the valleys; September and October are also the months with the steadiest wind and the best visibility for the balloon. March and April record relatively high winds and are the most uncertain period within the high season.

Winter sells badly and operates well: snow-covered valleys, underground cities at a constant temperature and the Open Air Museum without queues, in exchange for fewer daylight hours, local roads that may wake up icy and a balloon cancellation probability noticeably higher than in autumn.

Closures and hours we check on the Ministry museum portal when fixing each file:

• The Göreme Open Air Museum opens every day; summer hours apply roughly from 1 April to 1 October with closing around 19:00, and winter hours close around 17:00.
• Ministry museums and sites open at 13:00 on the first day of each bayram; on those dates the region's hotels fill with domestic demand and domestic flights sell out weeks ahead.
• The balloon flies twelve months a year, subject to the day's report: the decision is taken before dawn, on surface wind and visibility, and the daily quota is regulated. Why it is cancelled, month by month, is in when the Cappadocia balloon really flies.

Groups. The airport decides the day: Kayseri gives a large group room for manoeuvre and frequencies; Nevşehir saves transfer time if the schedule fits. One licensed guide per coach, a hotel with verified access and, if the group wants the balloon, a quota reservation with the actual dates and a free third morning. MICE and incentives. Cappadocia works as a two-night block inside an incentive that starts in Istanbul: domestic flight for the whole group, dinner show in a cave restaurant, dawn balloon as an optional activity and guided visits between sessions.
