Everything you need to plan Cappadocia: how many days to stay, what to see in Göreme and the valleys, the underground cities, the balloon flight and how to get there from Istanbul.
Volcanic erosion, fairy chimneys, churches carved into rock and a sky full of balloons every sunrise: Cappadocia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is Turkey's most extraordinary landscape. As an operator working in the region all year round, here is what you actually need to know to plan your visit.
Ideally 2 or 3 nights. Two full days cover Göreme, the valleys and an underground city; the third morning is the perfect backup for the balloon if wind forces a postponement — a frequent occurrence in the region.
Beneath Cappadocia lie dozens of carved cities where entire communities sheltered with their animals, cellars and chapels. Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu are the largest (up to 8 levels); Özkonak, less visited, keeps its circular stone doors intact — our groups often choose it precisely for its calm.

A Turkish night in a cave restaurant with whirling dervishes and Anatolian dances; a sunset quad or jeep safari through the valleys; a pottery workshop in Avanos; or visiting a fairy-chimney home where local families still live.

When is the best time? Spring and autumn: mild temperatures and good flying wind. Winter under snow is spectacular and far less crowded.
Is a cave hotel worth it? Yes: it is part of the experience, with options for every budget in Göreme, Uçhisar and Ürgüp.
Can you visit with children? Absolutely; only the underground cities require crouching in some passages.
