Istanbul in 5 Days: Day-by-Day Itinerary

Istanbul is the only city in the world spread across two continents, and five days is the ideal amount of time to see it properly: the imperial monuments, the Bosphorus, the bazaars and the neighbourhoods where locals actually live. We designed this itinerary as a local receptive operator, using the real transfer and visit timings from our own programs.

Day 1: Sultanahmet, the Historic Heart

Start on the historic peninsula: Hagia Sophia, the 6th-century Byzantine masterpiece; the Blue Mosque with its six minarets; the ancient Roman Hippodrome with the Egyptian Obelisk; and the Basilica Cistern, the underground reservoir with its Medusa columns. Everything is walkable within 500 metres. Finish with tea on a terrace overlooking the illuminated mosque.

Day 2: Topkapi Palace, Grand Bazaar and Spice Market

Spend the morning at Topkapi Palace, home of the Ottoman sultans for 400 years, with its courtyards, Treasury and Bosphorus views. In the afternoon, get lost in the Grand Bazaar (4,000 shops under one roof) and walk down to Eminönü through the Spice Market, past mountains of saffron, cinnamon and Turkish delight.

Day 3: Bosphorus Cruise, Galata and Karaköy

In the morning, take a Bosphorus cruise: waterfront palaces, Ottoman fortresses and wooden mansions between Europe and Asia. Then cross the Galata Bridge among the fishermen, climb the Galata Tower and explore Karaköy, the café-and-street-art district, up to Istiklal Avenue and its nostalgic red tram.

Day 4: The Asian Side — Üsküdar and Kadıköy

Take a ferry to Üsküdar for the Maiden's Tower and Sinan's mosques, stroll the colourful lanes of Kuzguncuk and finish in Kadıköy: its local market, food scene and the Moda seafront at sunset. This is the everyday Istanbul most visitors never see.

Day 5: Süleymaniye, Balat and Pierre Loti Hill

Close with the Süleymaniye Mosque, architect Sinan's masterpiece with the best panorama of the Golden Horn; the districts of Balat and Fener with their colourful houses and Byzantine churches; and Pierre Loti Hill, riding the cable car up for one last tea with a view.
